Defining Essentialism
Refer tothe weirdness of doing essential work in the education sphere, without a real understanding of what that meant. These feelings came back while I was working on Election Readiness at The New York Times. This time I was focused on more proactive measurements, but the added pressure of our active union labor dispute made it feel another level of existential.
Questions:
Who is considered an essential worker in tech? What qualifications do they need? Are on-call engineers inherently essential? Tech Leads?
How does this translate into union contexts? Differentiated contracts? How do we differentiate without recreating harmful systems?
