By the Way ...

Thanks to those of you who emailed and congratulated me on becoming a Charter member of CAPS. As I have often said, I send out these messages into the dark and it is a delight when someone contacts me back.

Today's article is a result of a conversation that I had with my daughter recently as I was driving her home from Toronto. Have you ever noticed that often your best conversations with loved ones are in the car? The car seems to induce a reflective state. While I'm sure that all of you who have worked with the public can relate to today's article, I want you to also think about your own 'weather' on a day to day basis. Remember Ghandi's words ... "Be the change you want to see in the world." How is your daily 'weather' contributing to the world you want to live in?

Please remember that I love hearing from you. Email me and tell me what you're particular area of growth this year will be!

Feature Article: You Carry Your Own Weather

“There needs to be a code of public conduct”, my daughter exclaimed. She went on to recount an incident that she witnessed the other day while waiting in the check out line at her local grocery store. Apparently a woman cut into the line and started screaming at the clerk while she was still waiting on my daughter. “I wanted to intervene on behalf of the clerk, my daughter said, but I didn’t. Instead I got out of there as fast as I could. These people come from nowhere and create this massive disturbance that leaves a trail of wreckage and negative, hurt feelings behind them. They are like hurricanes!”

All of my children, at one point or another, have worked serving the public. They often came home with the most outrageous stories about how rude people had been to them or to one of their colleagues. One in particular would come home in tears due to offensive customers.

You can consciously choose any state of mind that you want and make no mistake; your behaviour is a direct result of whatever you have chosen. Feeling good is our natural state of mind but most people are genuinely miserable.

Start noticing people’s moods next time you are out in a group and observe the 'chronic complainer', the ‘woe is me’ victim, and the ever sardonic ‘know it all’. Take note of the effect that they have on everyone around them. These people become toxic, contaminating the atmosphere around them and to compound the problem, their moods are contagious.

Think of your brain as a bio-computer and you as the programmer. What state of mind are you imputing into that bio- computer of yours? Your moods are primarily the result of what you are choosing to focus on.

Okay, let’s try an activity where I am going to show you just how easy it is to change your state of mind and in less than a minute!

Decide what state of mind you want or need
Remember a time when you exhibited that mood or state of mind
See what you saw then, hear what you heard then, are there any smells or a taste associated with that memory?
Get the remembered feeling as strongly as you can
Use your body to express that state of mind or mood

You know what most states of mind feel like, because at some time in your life you have felt every one of them. Just feel it again by connecting to that time and the circumstances which caused you to feel that state of mind. After some practice you can easily call up that mood anytime you want to.

As a public speaker, I have to determine what state of mind that I want to be in before I go in front of an audience. Usually, I shut my eyes and think back to a large group that I presented to outside of San Antonio, Texas, several years ago. I am standing in a large log structure with a fire blazing in the stone fireplace and feeling the light streaming in the through the large windows. The audience is totally engaged and I can hear them laughing in response to something that I have said. I open my eyes, stand tall with my shoulders back and I feel the energy and power of that event, just as I did back then. I now have the resources that I need to engage and energize the audience I am about to meet.

Just last week I was standing in line at my local dollar store watching the checkout clerk in absolute amazement. She was radiating energy, exuding happiness … calling everyone she served honey or sweetheart, and subsequently, everyone left that store smiling.

Now this lady carries her own weather and she is beaming down on everyone. What kind of weather are you programming? Are you choosing to be a tropical storm or a beautiful sunny day?

One more way that you can get a better life by getting 'Better At Living' the one that you've got!

You can change your life
You can make it better
You just have to get 'Better At Living' it!
