Feature Article: Bah Humbug, Valentine's Day
I have been married a long time, almost thirty years to be exact. Most Valentine's Day we tend to vaguely acknowledge it ... maybe with a card. I tell myself that it is just another occasion to spend money and to drive working women around the bend. I just recovered from Christmas and I'm supposed to do something about Valentines Day? Who is St. Valentine anyway and why do we celebrate this holiday?
The history of Valentine's Day -- and its patron saint -- is shrouded in mystery. But we do know that since the Middle Ages in England and France, February has been the month of romance. St. Valentine's Day, as we know it today, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition.
One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men -- his crop of potential soldiers. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine's actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death.
According to another legend, Valentine actually sent the first 'valentine' greeting himself. While in prison, it is believed that he fell in love with a young girl who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter, which he signed 'From your Valentine,' an expression that is still in use today.
This year is going to be different. Eduardo and I have decided to not only acknowledge the day but to really celebrate it. Being together for almost thirty Valentine's Days is something to celebrate. Surviving raising three children, their animals, friends and significant others is something to celebrate. We are so geared up for this that we started celebrating several days ago. We are behaving like teenagers!
So this Valentine's Day it doesn't matter if you are not currently involved with someone, there are lots of people in your life that you love and that love you. Just because St. Valentine's martyred himself for love does not mean that you have to.
The point is to celebrate ... reach out and let someone know that they are important in your life. Take this opportunity to celebrate our human connection. It could become habit forming.
