Feature Article: TGIF

"Personally, I have nothing against work, particularly when performed, quietly and unobtrusively, by someone else." (Barbara Ehrenreich)

WORK! It's one of those things that we love to hate! We spend a great deal of our lives preparing for it, often at huge expense, trying to get it, and then struggle to advance in it. Some people have more than one, most spend an average of forty hours a week doing it, many much, much more. We complain about it, long for weekends and holidays, but if we lose it for some reason, nothing is more devastating.

“The best way to appreciate your job is to imagine yourself without one.” Oscar Wilde

It seems for many of us our self esteem and our very identity is tied up in it. One of the first questions that you are likely to be asked at a social function is -"What do you do?" We usually answer with - "I am a ________".

I started working at the age of sixteen, and until recently, have always worked for someone else. Now, I work for myself, but in what ever form it takes, it is still work. In a recent survey over one half of the people polled were unhappy with their jobs. Is this you? Do you drag yourself out of bed each day? Do you spend your day watching the clock? If this describes you then you need to commit to spending your days in a more fulfilling way.

"Work unites your way of being with what you do". (Tao Te Ching)

Right! How can you do that, short of quitting? Let's look at some alternatives:

  1. Connect in a different way with the people you work with.
  2. Change your environment. Can you improve on how it looks, sounds or smells? Last spring I visited an office and someone had put a hyacinth on every desk. The smell was glorious not just for the people working there but for everyone who walked in as well.
  3. Isolate the elements of the job that you really like and spend as much of your time doing them as possible.
  4. Isolate the parts of the job that you don't like. How can you make doing them more satisfying? Be realistic. What percentage of your day do you spend on these parts?
  5. Learn something new. This for me is critical. I have to feel that I'm growing and learning something new all of the time.
  6. Change what you are focusing on in your day. What thoughts are you placing in the center of your day? If you wake up every morning and wish it were Friday then that is what you are going to experience.

Companies often have Mission Statements that focus their workforce on the intention of the company. Do you have a clear mission or intention when it comes to your job?

Is your purpose to -

Is collecting a pay check enough of a compelling reason or purpose for you? If it is then honour the place that allows you and your family to live the lifestyle that you have chosen. At each stage of your working life search for purpose. What are your talents and skills? What can I contribute here, what can I learn from this opportunity? How can I make a difference?

"I learned that you don't have to be doing your life's soulful purpose in order to find soul in your work." Mary X
